浮世絵
浮世絵は、江戸時代に最盛期を迎えた日本の大衆画のことです。
その題材は身近にあるもので、庶民の生活、美人、風景など数えきれないほどあります。
近世に入るまでのヨーロッパ芸術は、キリスト教世界を主題にした芸術作品が大半です。
一方、浮世絵は、自由な題材で描かれているのが大きな特徴です。
浮世絵は、「肉筆画」と「木版画」の大きな二つの種類に分けられます。
浮世絵が生まれたとされる江戸時代初期には、版画技術は発展しておらず、肉筆画が主流でした。
しかし、木版画の技術が発達すると、複製品を次々に作ることができるようになり、それと共に安価で庶民でも購入可能になり、大衆文化として根付いたのです。
このように、芸術が大衆文化と直接結びつくことは、西洋世界では見られないことでした。
また、版画でも、細かい部分まで丁寧に描かれて、色彩も美しかったことなどから、西洋の画家は日本の特筆する絵画の個性にいち早く注目しました。
世界的に有名なゴッホやマネなどの西洋の代表的画家は、浮世絵に大きな影響を受けたという意味でも非常に有名で、彼らは自らの絵に浮世絵の要素を積極的に取り入れました。
浮世絵は明治から大正時代になる頃には、写真技術の発達によって衰退していきました。
しかし、大衆芸術を開花させたことや、西洋にはない細やかさなどが西洋世界に受け入れられ、現在に至るまで大きな影響を残すことになったのです。

Ukiyo-e
Ukiyo-e is a Japanese popular painting, which reached its peak in the Edo period.
Its subject can be found in everyday lives and there are countless subjects, such as a life of common people, a pretty woman, and landscape.
While subjects of European art until the early modern times are mostly the Christian world, the significant feature of Ukiyo-e is drawing with a free subject.
Ukiyo-e is divided into two categories: the original drawing and the woodblock print.
In the early Edo period when ukiyo-e was invented, printmaking technology has not been developed, and original drawing was the mainstream.
However, when the technique of the woodblock print developed, reproductions can be made easily and common people were able to purchase them at a low cost, and it became popular culture.
It cannot be seen that art is connected directly to the popular culture in the Western world.
In addition, even prints, drawn carefully in detail, have beautiful color, and Western painters appreciated Japanese originality of unique paintings.
It is famous that Western representative painters, such as the world-famous Van Gogh have been influenced significantly by Ukiyo-e, and they have adopted the elements of Ukiyo-e to their own paintings.
Ukiyo-e had declined between the Meiji period and the Taisho period due to the development of photographic techniques.
However, it has developed popular arts and has been appreciated in the Western world, and then has left a significant impact until now.
