書道
「書道」とは、東洋の国々で広く見られる文字による芸術のことです。
日本には太古の時代に中国より伝来しましたが、それ以降、日本は書道を独自に発展させ、「日本式書道」を完成させました。
書道が日本で本格的に発展したのは、仏教が伝えられた時です。
仏教の教典を「写経」により人々に広める試みから、書道そのものが発展していきました。
平安時代には平仮名とカタカナが生まれ、中国本来の書道に日本の文字が加えられ、「和様書道」が完成しました。
そして、漢字と日本文字の融合により、書道は独自の道を歩むことになったのです。
「文字」とは、主に意思伝達の手段として使われ、西洋世界ではその領域に留まっています。
しかし、東洋世界では、文字の造形に注視し、それをいかに美しく書き表すか、という点を深く追求したのです。
こうして「文字」はただの「意思伝達手段」の領域を超え、芸術としての発展を遂げました。
そして、文字に人の心まで見るようになったのです。
私たちには「字のきれいな人、汚い人」という概念がありますが、西洋世界にはそのような概念はありません。
私たちにとって、文字は人格を表すものであり、文字を見ることによって、人を判断するのです。
また、同じく精神性を重んじる「茶道」「華道」などと連動した芸術でもあり、これらは全てセットで、ジャポニズムブームが起きた時に西洋世界に紹介され、現在も広く知られています。

Shodou
"Shodou" is calligraphic art seen widely in the Eastern countries.
It was introduced to Japan from China in the earliest times, since then, Japan has uniquely evolved calligraphy and invented "Japanese style calligraphy".
Calligraphy has seriously developed in Japan when Buddhism had been introduced to Japan.
By spreading scriptures of Buddhism with "Sutras", calligraphy itself has developed.
During the Heian period, Hiragana and Katakana were invented and Japanese characters were added to the Chinese original calligraphy, and then "Japanese style calligraphy" was invented.
By combining Chinese characters and Japanese characters, Japanese calligraphy has developed uniquely.
A character is used mainly as a communication tool in the Western world.
However, in the oriental world, designs of characters have been appreciated and people have dedicated themselves to pursue how to describe it beautifully.
Thus, characters have worked not only as a communication tool but also have developed as an art.
Then, people have observed human minds through characters.
While we have an idea that "people who can write beautiful characters or dirty characters", the western world does not have such an idea.
Characters can represent the personality. By observing characters, we can judge a person.
In addition, it is an art of respecting spirituality and is related to "sadou" and "kadou". These are a set and they were introduced to the Western world when Japonism has begun, and they have been widely known still now.
