驚くべき回復力
ヨーロッパでは、日本の「回復力」に注目した記事が多く見られました。
2009年、イタリア中部の町・ラクイラで、マグニチュード6.3の大地震が発生しました。
そして、町の復興はいまだ実現していません。
大地震で破壊された町は、廃墟となったまま半ば放置された状態です。
ところが、日本では、いち早く様々なものが復旧に向かいました。
震災で被害を受けた高速道路870kmのうち、813kmが、震災日から僅か6日で復旧したのです。
日本人は古くから、「無」に等しい状態から何度も立ち直ってきました。
1860年代の日本は、まだ鎖国状態でしたが、世界からの圧力により開国し、それ以降、急ピッチで近代化を図りました。
そして今度は第二次大戦での敗北。
日本は何もかも失ったかのように見えました。
しかし、そこからも日本は立ち直り、国を完全に立て直すどころか、世界屈指の経済大国にまでなったのです。
今回の被害では、絶望的なまでに壊滅的な被害を受けましたが、それでも人々は立ち上がっています。
諸外国の人々に言わせると、「何故すぐに復旧に取り組めるのか？」と理解に苦しむところでしょう。
しかし、私たちはただ、「やらなきゃしょうがない」という気持ちで、やむを得ず立ち上がっているだけなのだと思います。
そういう日本人の迅速な行動力と、その結果としての回復力には、諸外国の人々にとって、目を見張るものがあるようです。

Astonishing resilience
Plenty of articles focused on the resilience of Japan have been seen in Europe.

People in other countries have been very impressed with the prompt action of people in Japan and their recuperative powers.
