宮大工
宮大工は、神社、寺院、神輿など、日本の伝統と強く結びついた建築物を建築、若しくは修復する大工のことで、数多くいる大工の中でも、国宝級の建築物を手がけるという意味で、特別な重責を担っています。
宮大工は、日本の伝統、歴史、風土に精通するばかりでなく、昨今問題視されている耐震構造についても深い知識を持っていなくてはなりません。
宮大工には今も「従弟制度」が生きており、師から弟子へ口頭で技術を伝承していきます。
師についてありとあらゆる知識を深め、一流の宮大工になるためには何十年も要し、中途半端な気持ちで挑むことは決して許されません。
このような厳しい修行過程は、日本の伝統的職業のいたるところに見られますが、現在は、従弟制度のようなやり方で技術を身に付ける志を持つ者は大変少なく、後継者不足に悩まされています。
宮大工の祖先は、僧侶です。
朝鮮から来た僧侶が飛鳥寺を建立したのが、宮大工の始まりです。
僧侶が建築家を兼ねるとは驚くべきことのように思えますが、西洋でも、建築業が盛んになる前は、キリスト教教会などは修道士たちの手によって建てられてきました。
キリスト教に精通した西洋の人々が古代からの建築物を守ってきたように、日本にある神社や寺院は、日本の風土に生きてきた人々の手によってしか再現されないものと思われます。
そういう意味で、どの宮大工も国宝級の芸術家、といえそうです。

Miyadaiku
A Miyadaiku is a carpenter who specializes in Japanese traditional architecture, such as shrines, temples, and portable shrines and in charge of the national treasure of the building, so that he has a special responsibility among carpenters.
A Miyadaiku requires not only the knowledge of a Japanese tradition, history, and the natural features but also deep knowledges about earthquake-resistant structure that has been recently considered.

And it took decades to become a first-class Miyadaiku, and it is not allowed to challenge it with a halfhearted attitude.
Such a strict training can be seen everywhere in Japan's traditional occupations.
But now most of young people reluctant to work at the apprentice system, so it has led to a lack of successors.
Ancestors of Miyadaiku are monks.
The origin of Miyadaiku is the monk came from Korea who built Asukadera temple.
It seems astonishing that monks worked as architects, but in the West, before the building industry has become popular, Christian churches had been built by the monks.
As Western people who are familiar with Christianity have preserved the buildings since ancient times, it seems that shrines and temples in Japan are also reproduced only by people who have understood the natural features in Japan.
In that sense, it can be said that any miyadaiku is an artist of a living national treasure class.
