和の心
「和の心」は、私たちの生活の中に自然と存在し、その言葉を定義づけることは難しいように思われます。
しかし、敢えて定義づけると、「和の心」とは、「個人を重視するのではなく、集団における秩序や調和、また礼儀を重んじること」ということになります。
確かに私たちは、世界的に見て、過剰なまでに「集団主義」を貫いているといえるでしょう。
また、集団の中で相手の意思を読み取り、波長を合わせて行動をし、決して争わずに調和を保っています。
この「調和」は、「平和」にも通ずる部分であり、2011年に起きた東日本大震災で世界各国が絶賛した点です。
私たちは、互いを信頼し、集団行動でのルールを守ることができ、決して他人に迷惑をかけないのです。
この国民性は一方で、現代社会では「個々の個性を潰す」「自己表現が下手」と、国内外でバッシングされる対象になっています。
確かに第二次大戦後、西洋思想や文化が大量に輸入され、それらに無意識に影響を受け、日本らしさと西洋思想の狭間で、日本人らしい「和の心」は姿を変えつつあります。
それでも、第二次大戦直後の日本は、この「和の心」や「和の精神」で互いに手を取り合って、めまぐるしい発展を遂げたのです。
これから先、西洋式個人主義と日本式集団主義は緩やかに融合していくものと思われますが、それでも「和の心」は、世界の中で、日本人の美徳として受け入れられています。

The spirit of Wa(the spirit of harmony)
The Japanese spirit, the spirit of Wa, the spirit of harmony exists naturally in our lives, so that it is difficult to define what it is.
However, if I dare define it, it means "emphasizing orders, harmony and decencies within the community rather than individual rights."
Indeed, it can be said that Japanese excessively devote themselves to the community which they belong to.
Furthermore, people respect what others think and cooperate with one another in a harmonious community without conflict.
The harmony can lead to the peace, which was praised by other countries when the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred in 2011.
We can trust each other and obey the rules in a community, so that we do not cause troubles to others.
On the other hand, this national character implies "losing the individual personality" or "having poor self-expressions", which can be the cause of criticism both within and outside of the country in our modern society.
Indeed, after the Second World War, while the large quantities of Western ideas and culture have been introduced to Japan, Japanese spirit of harmony has been changing between Western ideas and Japan's Identity.
However, after World War II, people have worked together with "the mind of harmony" or the "the spirit of harmony" and the country has grown rapidly.
From now on, while it seems that Western individualism and Japanese collectivism will integrate gradually, "the spirit of harmony" has been still considered as a Japanese virtue.
