武士・侍
武士は、10世紀～19世紀に日本に存在した職業で、殿を頂点にした共同体を形成していました。
刀を持ち、武芸を身につけており、身を以て将軍を守るのが主な役割で、今で言う政治家と軍人を兼ねた職業に近いかもしれません。
また「武士」とは、その社会的身分を表す言葉でもありました。
「侍」は、武士の中でも最も位の高い人々のことで、武士の中のごく一部です。
武士には「武士道」という価値観・概念がありました。
その概念の中核にあるのは、「自らの命をかける」ということです。
殿を守るために命をも惜しまない覚悟、また失敗した時には自ら命を捨てるという覚悟が全ての武士にありました。
これらの「命をかけた任務」「何かあれば命を絶つ」「命を絶って責任を取る」という事柄が、「切腹」という文化を生みました。
このような「武士道」は、命を自ら落とすことが美徳とされる文化であり、日本の特異な文化の一面として、海外に紹介されてきました。
特に、幕末に武士の家に生まれた新渡戸稲造が海外で、武士道について広く紹介した功績は大きかったと言われています。
また、ハリウッド大作「ラスト・サムライ」などの娯楽が、武士文化を広める担い手にもなったことでしょう。
武士は、日本開国と共に、自分たちの手で武士制度を廃止しました。
自分の身分を潔く捨て新しい時代に進んでいった姿にもまた、毅然とした美しさがあると言えるのではないでしょうか。

Samurai
A samurai is a profession that has existed in Japan from the 10th century to the 19th century.

A samurai has a sword and plays martial arts, and plays a main role to protect a shogun.
It might be similar to the role of politicians and soldiers in the present day.
In addition, a samurai was the name to describe the social status.
A samurai is the highest-ranking people among a bushi and it is a part of a bushi.
A bushi had the values and the concept called Bushido.
The core concept of Bushido is to risk one's life.
All bushis were prepared for losing their own lives in order to protect the palace or if they failed, they were prepared for losing their own lives.
Mission to risk one's life or answering for the crime with one's life led to the culture of Seppuku.
In Bushido, to commit suicide by cutting open the abdomen is considered as a virtue, which has been introduced to abroad widely as one of Japan's unique culture.
In particular, Nitobe Inazou who was born in a samurai family introduced Bushido abroad in the end of Edo period.
And it is said that this achievements was significant.
In addition, an entertainment such as the Hollywood movie "The Last Samurai" has been also the trigger to spread the samurai culture.
Bushi, along with Japan’ opening of the country, abolished the bushi system in their own hands.
Their abandoning their social identity and going forward to a new period can be regarded as a resolute attitude.
