「仕方がない」
「仕方がない」という言葉は、以前からアメリカの作家や学者たちによって使われてきた日本語の一つです。
但し、非常にネガティブな意味で使われることが多かったようです。
日本人における「仕方がない」という言葉は、「諦めが早い」「主張が足りずに弱腰」を示すような意味合いを含むと言われてきたのです。
ところが震災後、「仕方がない」という言葉は、海外メディアでポジティブな意味で報道されるようになりました。
英語版ウィキペディアで調べると、「仕方がない」とは、「想像を絶する、何者も太刀打ちできない状況に直面しているときに日本人が見せる尊厳、日本人の能力」と記されています。
震災で家屋を失い、全てを海にさらわれてしまったら、そこでどうあがいても、何も戻ってこないのです。
そこでパニックになり、何とかしようとしても、結局何もできません。
ただ状況を受け入れ、次に進むしかないのです。
「仕方がない」とは、一つの太刀打ちできない状況を乗り越えるための「区切り」の手段だと思われます。
私たちは震災直後、全てを「仕方がない」という考えで割り切って現実を受け入れ、「仕切り直し」をしたのではないでしょうか。
「仕方がない」という言葉は、このように、諸外国ではかつてネガティブにしか受け止められていませんでしたが、震災後に、皮肉にも「日本人の素晴らしい精神の一つ」といわれ、賞賛されたのです。

Shikata ga nai
Shikata ga nai is a Japanese language phrase that have been used by American writers and scholars.
However, it seems it used to be often used as such a negative sense.
It used to be said that the phrase implies giving up easily or self-effacing and coward.
But after the earthquake, the phrase shikata ga nai is now reported as a positive sense through the foreign media.
If you refer to the English version of Wikipedia, the phrase is described as "the ability of the Japanese people to maintain dignity in the face of an unavoidable tragedy or injustice, particularly when the circumstances are beyond their control."
If you lost home and everything by the earthquake and tsunami, nothing can be done about it.
Even if you get caught up in a panic and try to do something, you cannot do anything after all.
You just have to accept the situation and go forward.
Shikata ga nai is the mean to change and overcome the situation which is beyond their control.
We may accept the reality with the idea of shikata ga nai to change the situation.
The phrase shikata ga nai used to be regarded as a negative meaning in other countries, but after the earthquake, ironically it has been praised and referred to as one of the great spirit of the Japanese people.
