はじめに
2011年3月11日。
私たちの身に何が起こったか、それは言うに及びません。
私たちは東日本大震災のあったあの時、東北地方の人たちは特に未来を思い描けずに途方に暮れ、首都圏の人々も、日々の余震や残酷な現状が報道されることに堪らない苛立ちと絶望感を抱いていたことでしょう。
私たちは、完全にパニック状態にあり、人生最悪なことが起こった、と思ったに違いありません。
しかし暫くすると、世界各国が日本人の生身の姿を報道するようになり、そこに深い敬意を払い、私たちの行動を賞賛するようになったのです。
私たちが現実の困難に耐えながら、助け合って生活を続けている姿、それは私たちにとって、当たり前の光景にすら見えます。
しかし、諸外国ではそうではなかったのでしょう。
彼らにとって、私たちのパニック状態はパニック状態と見做すには及ばない程度のことだと思い、そして、混乱のさなかに略奪や暴動が起きなかったことを賞賛すると同時に、不思議にも思ったのです。
確かに大きな自然災害は、人為的な二次災害を生みやすいのでしょう。
人気がなくなった商店からモノを奪う人が出てきても不思議ではありません。
しかし、日本では顕著にそのようなことは起きませんでした。
何故、私たちのありきたりの日常的行為が、諸外国の人々には新鮮で素晴らしいものに映ったのでしょうか？
それを、じっくり探ってみたいと思います。

We all must know what happened to us.
When the earthquake occurred, people in the Tohoku region were at a loss as they were not able to expect their future and even people in the metropolitan area must have been frustrated and disappointed with the news of a series of aftershocks and the terrible disaster.
We all must have been completely panicked and believed that the worst thing happened in their lives.
However, after a while, other countries began to report Japanese behavior, respect and praise it.
While it seems common for us to cooperate with one another to recover from a difficult situation, it is not so common in foreign countries.
Japanese people seemed not to be panicked for people in foreign countries and they praised that the disaster did not cause looting or riots in this situation. At the same time, they wondered why they did not occur.
Indeed, deadly natural disasters may trigger a secondary human-generated disaster.
It is no wonder that looting occurs in deserted stores.
However, these incidents did not occur in Japan.
Then, why have people in foreign countries been impressed with our usual behavior?
I would like to explore it thoroughly.
